Tirzepatide for Weight Loss: Separating Fact from Fiction
As the search for effective weight loss solutions continues, a groundbreaking medication has emerged: tirzepatide. Unlike traditional weight loss drugs, tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. This medication class is a once-a-week injectable synthetic version of a naturally occurring hormone in the body. It targets the area of the brain that regulates our appetite and food consumption. It slows down stomach emptying, leaving you feeling fuller for a longer period of time, and stimulates the secretion of insulin to slow the release of glucagon in your body. The unique dual-action mechanism sets tirzepatide apart from other treatments, making it a powerful weight loss tool.

Who Can Benefit from Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is primarily designed for adults aged 18 to 75 who fall into one of these categories:

Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 (classified as obese)
Those with a BMI greater than 27 (overweight) who also have weight-related medical issues such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol

However, tirzepatide is not suitable for everyone. It's contraindicated for individuals with certain medical conditions, including thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or a history of pancreatitis. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using tirzepatide. Additionally, you are not a good candidate if you have any of the following: diabetic retinopathy, low blood sugar, congestive heart failure, decreased kidney function, suicidal thoughts, plans, or a history of suicidal thoughts, or are currently taking Warfarin.
Tirzepatide Dosage and Administration
Tirzepatide treatment typically follows a gradual dose escalation to minimize potential side effects:

Starting dose: 2.5 mg once weekly for 4 weeks
Increase to 5 mg once weekly for at least 4 weeks
If needed, further increases to 7.5 mg, 10 mg, or 12.5 mg once weekly, based on individual response and tolerability

The medication is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week. Patients receive instructions on proper injection techniques and are closely monitored by healthcare providers throughout their treatment journey.

If you are currently on Tirzepatide at another practice and would like to become our patient, please click on "start my online visit," complete the intake form, and activate your account in the email. Once your account is activated, you can upload documents in the Menu section. Upload a copy/picture of your current prescription, and your provider will review it. The picture must contain your full name, medication dosing, and directions.
Potential Side Effects and Risks
While tirzepatide has shown impressive efficacy, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. Common side effects include:

Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Constipation, Abdominal pain, Headache, Fatigue

These side effects are generally mild and tend to subside as the body adjusts to the medication. However, more serious risks, though rare, can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and changes in heart rate. There's also a potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, so this medication should not be prescribed to individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or neoplasia syndrome type-2 (MEN-2). Other risks include:

Gallbladder problems, such as gallstones
Pancreatitis
Suicidal thinking or behavior
Diabetic retinopathy

Regular medical supervision and open communication with healthcare providers are crucial for managing potential risks and ensuring the safe use of tirzepatide.
